South Tufa Area

Amazing formations! A nice walk from the parking lot to the lake where the tufa formations are. The water feels "soapy" and a bit salty. A pleasant walk. Big shout out to the volunteers whose wealth of knowledge furthered our enjoyment of this alien landscape. Parking is $3 dollars a person and they take card

This is my favorite spot to look at Tufa. Nice little loop walk and ample perking. There is a self service fee here of 3$ per person over the age of 16. Well worth the price and the money goes to a good cause. There are four pit toilets here and there's also access to navy beach area here also. Beautiful spot.

We thoroughly enjoyed a scenic 1-mile hike to see the unique rock formations known as tufa that line the shores of Mono Lake. Tufa is beautiful and provides essential nesting habitat for various bird species. The visibility of tufa around Mono Lake has increased due to a significant drop in the lake level, which began after the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power started excessive water diversions in 1941. Once tufa formations emerge above the waterline, they can no longer grow and become vulnerable to erosion. A fee of $3 per person is payable at a self-service kiosk. The gravel road to the site is well-maintained, making it accessible by any car.
