Marfa Lights Viewing Area Stopped here on the way to Big Bend and lucked out with a night where something actually showed up. If you go expecting a full ghost show you will probably be disappointed. A lot of the time it does look like distant headlights on a plain. But there is a reason people have been talking about these lights for over a century. Locals say the lights were reported long before cars, highways, or even the main road existed. Some World War II pilots flying training missions over the area also claimed they saw strange flickering glows in the desert that did not match anything on the ground. Whether that is folklore or something genuinely odd, it adds to the vibe. On my night, long exposures with a zoom lens showed lights that looked like will-o-the-wisps. Little points that jumped and faded in a way that did not feel like normal traffic. Skeptics point to atmospheric refraction, basically heat layers bending light from faraway cars or towns, and that is probably part of it. Still, it does not fully explain how weird they can look. The night skies out here are dark and beautiful and perfect for photography. If you are passing through and curious about a quiet slice of Texas weirdness, it is worth stopping. I am glad I caught it on a good night and got some wild shots out of it.

To get to the viewing area, go East from Marfa on US-90 and you’ll see it off the highway on the right. There’s a nice roadside building with a parking lot, bathrooms, a few signs on the strange history of the lights, and a nice viewing platform with some built-in binoculars. There’s plenty of space for people to stand or sit, some people even sat out camp chairs, but it is open air so be prepared if it’s cooler or windy (we were freezing over New Year’s with the wind gusts)! The Marfa Lights are such a cool mystery in West Texas and I’m so glad we stopped here on our way back from the McDonald Observatory’s star party, even if we didn’t get to see the mysterious lights for ourselves… “I want to believe!”

Was recommended for a visit even during day. We went out of our way to go there during weekday Nov morning, but not much to see. Some educational content to walk and read and clean restrooms but I would only stop if on your way.
