Georgia O'Keeffe's legendary desert retreat becomes a peaceful sanctuary in November, offering quiet trails through dramatic, sun-drenched cliffs that glow with amber hues. The solitude found here captures the essence of the Southwest's rugged, contemplative beauty before winter descends.
Ghost Ranch is a 21,000-acre (85 km2) retreat and education center in Rio Arriba County in north central New Mexico, United States. It is about 65 miles northwest of Santa Fe and 14 miles from Abiquiu, the nearest community. In the later 20th century, it was the summer home and studio of artist Georgia O'Keeffe, as well as the subject of many of her paintings. It often serves as a location for movie production. Ghost Ranch is owned by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and leased to and managed by The National Ghost Ranch Foundation, Inc.
Read more on WikipediaI have come for day visits, mainly for the amazing scenery and hiking. And I've also camped in a tent. The red rock country in this area is similar to what is in national parks in southern Utah, stunningly beautiful. There are three trails that can be day hiked, one of which, Kitchen Mesa, is the best day hikes in the state for scenery. Box Canyon trail is great for birding. The rustic and scenic campground is recommended for tent camping. There is ample space between sites and places to put up a tent, plus nearby shower house. Similar to what one might find at a state park that's not too over developed and too oriented towards RVs like many are these days. There are also an array of interesting and diverse retreat style offerings, one of which I have done, a nature meditation retreat which was great. The one ding I might suggest is the mediocre basic food service, but it does meet the need for sustenance in a cost friendly manner, so I'm still sticking with 5 stars overall.

Exploring Ghost Ranch History, Trails & Views That Take Your Breath Away We stopped at Ghost Ranch on our way from Taos to Farmington, and it quickly became one of the most fascinating places we’ve visited in New Mexico. The site is surrounded by incredible red and golden cliffs that inspired Georgia O’Keeffe’s most famous paintings, and you can truly feel that creative energy everywhere you go. We parked for free near the Welcome Center, where the staff was friendly and helpful. Inside, we found clean restrooms, detailed maps, and a lot of educational material about the area’s history, geology, and fossils. There’s also a small museum with excellent exhibits about local art and paleontology – admission was only $10 per person, totally worth it. Since we didn’t have much time, we skipped the guided tour ($10 per person) and went straight to the Chimney Rock Trail. The hike is about 3 miles round-trip, not too hard, and the views from the top are absolutely breathtaking wide open landscapes, unique rock formations, and peaceful silence all around. If you’re visiting northern New Mexico, this place is a must-see. Plan at least half a day or more if you want to explore the trails, museums, and visitor center properly. The mix of art, nature, and history makes Ghost Ranch truly unforgettable. 📸🌄
