Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site

AMAZING PLACE!!! The staff was really nice, they even let you hold/touch their muskets and swords. The history was really interesting. The gift shop has affordable items. There was a lot to see there. ALSO MAKE SURE YOU DONT GO THERE 1-2 HOURS BEFORE IT CLOSES (5:00 pm). Trust me your gonna miss a lot of interesting things! Also you can go there for free on specific days!

Great place to visit! Had grandparents and our kids and it was a great time for all. Working blacksmith and bakery, as well as full service restaurants and a cafe and tavern. There were demonstrations and reenactments. Even on a foggy day it was a surreal experience, and we really enjoyed it. • The fortress/city is an Open World type of engagement - you can do as much or as little as you want • there is something for everyone - there’s even a kids “camp” area on the second floor of one of the houses where kids can color • exhibits are well done and very detailed and informative • the level of preservation and work that has gone into the town is truly incredible; the entire vibe of the town is almost unbroken • the staff do an excellent job of balancing “staying in character” while remaining engaging and helpful. Period dress, deep knowledge, helpful tips, and all we met were at least bilingual (French and English) Overall, a great experience. We spent 2 hours there and barely made it thru half the town!

Our visit to Fortress of Louisbourg on April 1st 2026 turned into something we will never forget. Despite warnings of freezing rain and heavy winds, we made our way there, but the moment we stepped out of the car, we were slipping on the icy road in -2°C weather. The Fortress is so beautiful from the outside and I'm sure it's even more wonderful from the inside. We didn't get a chance to explore the place but we were mesmerised by the beauty of it and the road leading to it. An incredible historic place to visit, truly. We were simply looking for washrooms when we knocked on a door, and two Parks Canada officials kindly welcomed us inside and even let us use the washroom in their office because it was unsafe outside. Their warmth in such harsh weather meant so much. As we spoke, they learned we were hoping to find souvenirs. Although they didn’t have fridge magnets, they thoughtfully gave us a Louisbourg dress sticker and a soft toy named Parka (Parks Canada’s official mascot), and even searched for a magnet for us. When they couldn’t find one, they took our address and email, promising to send it later. Though we had to leave soon after due to worsening weather, the kindness we experienced stayed with us. Two weeks later, when we received a package from them, it honestly felt like opening a piece of kindness we didn’t even know how much we needed. Inside was a beautifully written note along with some incredibly thoughtful goodies, and in that moment, we were completely overwhelmed in the best way possible. It wasn’t just about what they sent, but the fact that they remembered us, took the time, and followed through on a promise made during such a brief, weather-beaten encounter. In a world where people often forget small interactions, this gesture stood out as something deeply human and genuinely heartfelt. We cannot express how grateful we are for this. It made us feel seen, valued, and cared for in a way that is so rare and special. They didn’t have to do any of this, but they chose to and that choice made a lasting impact on us. It’s these small, selfless acts of kindness that stay with you long after the moment has passed, and this is something we will always carry with us. Parks Canada truly has some of the most wonderful, warm-hearted people, and because of this experience, the Fortress of Louisbourg is no longer just a place we visited, it’s a place that now holds a very special place in our hearts. We will absolutely come back, hopefully in better weather, but with the same excitement and gratitude. Maria and her colleague, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
