Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine

One of the best historical sites I have visited. I came on a cold day, with about 8 inches of snow on the ground. Paths and parking lot were cleared, easy to get around. The staff were amazing, as was the volunteer who gave a guided walk. The fort is well preserved and the interpretive exhibits are great, acknowledging the complex history of our country and Fort McHenry’s role in that history. The views of the Patapsco and Baltimore are beautiful. The multimedia exhibit and video about the battle for Baltimore on September 13-14, 1814 and Francis Scott Key’s drafting of what became our national anthem was very well done. Highly recommend stop here in this 250th anniversary of the United States.

This historic national monument is where the Star-Spangled Banner was inspired, and you can feel the patriotic vibes. The fort's stunning location on the Patapsco River offers beautiful views and waterfront walks. It is possible to learn a lot about the 1814 battle that inspired Francis Scott Key's iconic poem which in the 1930s became the USA National Anthem. The movie is totally worthy and the end is great (even on a not windy day). There is a trail available to walk for free of charge. If you want to explore the historic fortifications, barracks, and exhibits there is a fee per person (or use the Annual National Park Pass). There are days with flag-changing ceremonies(check the schedule), reenactments, and concerts. It was not crowded, but it was a winter day. Parking was great, but consider public transit or walking during the summer. Restrooms on site and a nice gift shop. As always, the park rangers are amazing, friendly, and knowledgeable.

The park was very clean (minus some goose 💩) and very updated, we did not spend the $15 per person to enter the monument but we did go into the visitor center which has a great movie and musiem. The movie is honestly worth the time, not for the movie alone but the effects around you. The whole experience was fun and a nice walk with amazing views of the water, did feel a little propaganda-y, but that's America for ya.
