Tall, historic, still-operating 1848 lighthouse featuring tours, scenic views & more.
Bodie Island Lighthouse (pronounced “body”), is truly one of those places that captures everything special about the Outer Banks and is a must-visit for anyone coming to OBX. The lighthouse itself is open for climbing during the summer months, and the climb is well worth it for the incredible views from the top. Even outside of the climbing season, the grounds are open year-round and offer plenty to enjoy. The surrounding area features peaceful walking trails, open spaces, and a beautifully scenic landscape that feels calm and unspoiled. It’s an ideal spot for family photos, couples, or anyone looking for a picturesque backdrop. We love visiting to walk around, take photos, and simply enjoy the views. When the visitor center is open, it’s also a great opportunity to learn about the history of the lighthouse and the area, which really enhances the experience. We’ve visited on weekdays, weekends, and even on holidays, and it rarely feels overcrowded. Outside of major holidays, it’s usually easy to explore at your own pace without feeling rushed. The open space makes it feel relaxing even when other visitors are around. One of our favorite times to visit is in the evening. The night sky here is absolutely stunning—the stars are unmatched and make for an unforgettable experience. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and a great way to end a day in the Outer Banks. Whether you’re interested in history, photography, nature walks, or just taking in the scenery, Bodie Island Lighthouse offers something for everyone. We continue to return every time we visit OBX, and it’s always one of the highlights of our trip. Highly recommended and truly a classic Outer Banks destination! 🌅✨
Glad we took the time to check this place out. I wish they stated the light is closed to the top. Very scenic place to explore. Board walk in very good shape and has been recently been repaired with plenty of new boards. Bathroom was clean and tidy. Parking lots is spacious even for a full size pick up truck. Says open 24 hours. They should post times for the light house and facilities separately.
Such a beautiful lighthouse. I really treasure being able to get so close to it and walk the grounds even in off season when they’re closed. The restroom was open and clean the day after christmas. Short walk to the overlook on a well kept boardwalk. Lots of birds and other wildlife. Suitable for all and really spectacular views.
