Series of hills in pastel hues, colored by oxidation & weathering, along 9-mi. Artist's Drive loop.
Lovely multi-colored mounds at 2 main stops (with designated parking if not full) along Artists Drive. One Way so be sure to make both stops in my opinion so you don't have to drive around another time. The drive is fully paved, though it does narrow and descends quite steeply at times. Definitely go slow and watch for the road signs indicating these conditions. First main stop is a short unnamed trail along a ridge that overlooks distant rocks, with reds and greens throughout. It was the first spot I saw along the way that had some wildflower blooms facing the afternoon sun on the west side and along the wash of the ridge. The next is Artist's Palette, which are multiple mounds condensed together like the start nature's artwork π¨. Most people stayed near the parking lot or descended into the mounds. There's a short ridge up left of the parking lot which gives lovely views a bit higher up and most didn't crowd around that area with me. I think the best time to view would be afternoon before sunset, so the sun is shining directly on the colored rocks. There are shoulders along the way to stop as well and spot additional views of the canyons as well as much more wildflowers near the end of the drive. Also I suggest downloading the offline map through the free NPS App before entering the park. It has all the trails, viewpoints, etc that can still be accessed without cellular connection and can help with your location within the park.
Been here a couple times, most recently end of February 2026. Super bloom when I came, which was a nice bonus. Drive is not too long and two stops for viewing. Only did Artist's Pallette this time. It was solid not spectacular IMO. Perhaps that is a function of seeing it a second time, but I was still amazed by Dante's Peak viewpoint, so maybe not. Anyway, was pretty crowded when I came. Got one of last spots. Don't recall a bathroom. Spent like 20 mins driving and stopping, so not a big time commitment unless you hike at first stop. I did that last time but not this one. Recommended for sure but not my favorite spot in DVNP.
Nice drive on a one-way road through interesting and colorful rock formations. There is a parking area, outhouse, and a short hike mid-way through the drive the hike takes you for a close up view of the colored hillside of the Artists Palette. Itβs a great spot at any time of day, but the low lighting of evening is when this spot is at its best. This is a must-see location within the park!
