Biggest island in the Great Salt Lake, with a state park for hiking & wildlife like bison.
I honestly don’t understand how anyone can leave negative reviews for this park and lower its rating. How can you even bring yourself to write something bad about a place like this? This park is absolutely incredible. It is truly comparable to Yellowstone National Park and Yosemite National Park and many other national parks in the United States. In my opinion, it is completely underrated and in many ways even more beautiful than some of the famous parks. One of the most incredible experiences here is the opportunity to stand just a few meters away from a real wild bison peacefully grazing on green grass. You will almost never find an experience like this anywhere else in the United States. Seeing such a powerful animal calmly standing near the road, where you can observe every detail — every hair, every movement — is simply breathtaking. This place is unbelievably beautiful. There is a unique sense of silence here, and beauty everywhere you look. If you take the time to explore and walk around, you will discover countless amazing spots. The key is not to be lazy — walk, explore, and give yourself time. Plan to spend the entire day here. At first it might seem like there isn’t much to see, but once you start looking more closely, you will begin to notice incredible things everywhere. I visit Antelope Island State Park about every six months. I’m actually quite picky, and I’m one of those people who thinks Yellowstone is somewhat overrated because of the huge crowds. You will not find that here. On Antelope Island you might only see a few cars and a few people during the entire day. Instead, you get something much more valuable — peace, quiet, and a deep connection with nature. The landscape here is truly unique. I have traveled extensively across the United States, and places like this are extremely rare. It feels like a very special natural reserve. I’ll also mention one concern I’ve noticed. Over the past five years it seems like there are fewer bison than before, although I don’t know the exact reason. I’ve heard different explanations from locals. Some say there was a fire on the island, although I personally didn’t see clear signs of that. Others say that the bison population is carefully managed so they don’t reproduce too quickly, because otherwise the island would eventually become overcrowded. I’m not sure which explanation is true. One tip: come early in the morning if you want to see the bison waking up and grazing. Also plan ahead if you visit on weekdays — there are no restaurants or cafés open, so bring sandwiches or snacks with you. It’s absolutely worth it. Don’t worry about eating simple food for a day — the experience here is far more important. If you visit between Thursday and Sunday, there is a great small café where you can even try bison meat. There are also clean restrooms located around the island. Expect to hike for several hours. It is truly worth it. This place is simply extraordinary. If you have even a little sense of photography, you will take absolutely incredible pictures here.
Antelope Island is a really beautiful place to explore if you enjoy nature and wide open views. The scenery around the lake is peaceful and there are plenty of spots to stop, walk around, and take photos. I liked seeing wildlife along the way, which made the visit even more interesting.
This state park could be mistaken for a National Park. Every direction you look, there is stunning scenery (winter 2026). My wife and I showed up at sunrise and the day just kept getting better by the second. The hikes were very manageable and boast stunning panoramic views. I would suggest that all visitors keep a fair distance away from the buffalos as they are were not reluctant to show their displeasure with lifting their heads and partially charging. Take my $15 and run with it, money well spent!
