Witness Amicalola Falls, Georgia's tallest cascading waterfall, at its most powerful in April, fed by abundant spring rains. A challenging trail leads to stunning views, or opt for accessible overlooks.
Amicalola Falls State Park & Lodge is an 829-acre (3.35 km2) Georgia state park located between Ellijay and Dahlonega in Dawsonville, Georgia. The park's name is derived from a Cherokee language word meaning "tumbling waters". The park is home to Amicalola Falls, a 729-foot (222 m) waterfall that is the highest in Georgia. However, an analysis conducted by the World Waterfall Data base suggests that the main part of the falls is 429 feet (131 m) in height, followed by a prolonged gently sloping run in which the flow drops another 279 feet (85 m). It is considered to be one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia. An 8-mile (13 km) trail that winds past Amicalola Falls and leads to Springer Mountain, famous as the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, begins in the park. Amicalola Falls State Park also offers many hiking trails, a guest lodge, restaurant, cabins, a shelter for long-distance Appalachian Trail hikers, a campground, and access to the eco-friendly Len Foote Hike Inn.
Read more on WikipediaThis place is truly a refreshing escape into nature. The moment you arrive, the sound of rushing water and the crisp, fresh air instantly create a calming atmosphere. The waterfall is absolutely beautiful as it cascades down the rocks, surrounded by lush greenery and seasonal colors that make the entire view feel alive. Standing near it, you can’t help but pause and soak in the serenity it brings. The trail leading up to the falls is well maintained, marked clearly, and lined with tall trees that offer both shade and stunning views. The gentle breeze, mixed with the earthy scent of the forest, makes the hike enjoyable and relaxing. Even in the fall, the play of golden and red leaves adds a magical touch, making every step of the journey worthwhile. What I love most is how peaceful and energizing this place feels. It’s the perfect spot to disconnect from the busyness of everyday life and simply be present in nature. Whether you’re hiking, taking photos, or just sitting quietly to listen to the water, every visit leaves you refreshed and renewed. This is one of those places you’ll want to return to again and again. 🌿💧🍂🍁😇
Been to this beautiful park many many times. Have hiked the Appalachian Approach Trail. Love the falls. The only negative was the website showed the Visitors Center open until 6:00pm on Fridays, but they closed at 5:00 pm. Not sure if the other days are correct. I witnessed several visitors being turned away. They all were not very happy. Fortunately, I was able to get in and purchase some souvenirs, before they locked the doors and started mopping the floors. I would have been pretty ticked-off, if they had already been closed, but showed on-line they were open. I did notice that there were no posted hours on the doors. I do have to say though, it is one of the nicest Visitors Centers I have been in. They even have a cafe. Not sure why they were turning away potential customers, if their website shows a later closure time. If they have changed their hours, they need to change the time on the website. Smartphones are how we operate in today's world, so websites should accordingly, be accurate and kept up-to-date. Apart from that, I loved my visit.
I’ve been to Ruby Falls before, but I found Amicalola Falls to be bigger and more enjoyable. The accessibility was better, and it was perfect for a light hike with kids. We had a wonderful time exploring together.
